Big Brother
Since the Cold War, Israel and the United States have been working together and this relationship has continued to grow stronger over the years. Over the years and currently the U.S. has provided the Israelis with the best in military equipment to further strengthen the country. This companionships can be linked to shared Western style democratic values as well as the United States using the country as a strategic buffer zone for the Middle East. This buffer zone is seen as a crucial asset and with that the U.S strives to keep Israels Qualitative Military Edge (QME) at the top of its priority. Maintaing the QME requires the continued support of military supplies and weapons, but rather them as a defensive tool, it seems that Israel is instead going on the offensive.
Israel and Palestine
It is no secret that the Palestines and Israel do not get along. This feud started in the 1940s with a disagreement over who the land in the region belonged to. After a few years, a proposal was made that would officially separate the region into Palestine and Israel, with the Palestinians getting about 43% of the land. The Palestines rejected the proposal and now they barely make up 20% of the population in the area. How did their population get cut in half over the past 47 years?
Pushing Palestine out
Shortly after the rejected proposal, the United States started supporting Israel and as this support grew and the Israelis become more powerful, the Palestinian area began to shrink. Rather than creating a strategic buffer, instead America is starting to be seen as bullying by other Middle Eastern countries. This is not the look we need to be going for as we try to win hearts and minds over in the area.
Today the news and some government leaders label the Palestinian people as terrorists and a threat to Western values and U.S. allies. Perhaps this is not the case and instead the Israelis are taking advantage of the QME, which is supposed to be used for defense, and using it in a attempt to push Palestine off the map completely.
